Cincinnati, Ohio, January 13, 2023 – The Charles H. Dater Foundation awarded seven new grants in December totaling $490,000, including a $100,000 award to CET Public Media Connect for children’s programing on WCET stations.

Over 80% of Greater Cincinnati children ages 2-8, and their caregivers, tune in to and trust the 70 hours of weekly children's programming on CET.  Each year, new children's programming is developed for PBS stations to purchase and use to educate their youngest viewers.  As with all programming, it is tested with PBS to ensure that viewers learn through embedded elements on-air and online.

Research confirms that parents overwhelmingly agree no other media source meets their children’s school readiness needs like PBS KIDS.  The study also found that nine in 10 parents are likely to use PBS KIDS resources for school preparedness and three-quarters say their child exhibits more positive behavior after engaging with PBS Parents.  This was especially true for those in low-income households.

Grants made in December:

CET Public Media Connect, $100,000.  See above.

Dragonfly Foundation, $30,000.  Support for pediatric cancer patients and their families visiting Cincinnati Children’s  includes activity programs and gifting, including a 45-item Care Bag with hospital-approved personal care item for every member of the family.

Dress for Success, $20,000.  The HigherHER career development program helps unemployed and under-employed women gain professional skills, accelerate their job search, and build confidence.

Greater Cincinnati Foundation (Learning Links and Summertime Kids), $250,000.  The Learning Links program funds small grants of up to $1,250 to teachers and other educators allowing them to provide creative programs or special events for more than 30,000 area students.  Summertime Kids of up to $1,000 are administered through a volunteer committee and enable local nonprofit organizations to provide summer activities such as field trips, day camps, gardening, arts and crafts for deserving some 12,000 young people.

New Leaf Kitchen, $30,000.  Root-Up Cooking brings in-person, hands-on food and cooking education to underserved schoolchildren who in turn can take their learning home to impact their families.

Sweet Cheeks Diaper Bank, $35,000.  Mindful that diaper need can be more stressful than food insecurity, a largely volunteer organization works to raise funds and leverage in-kind support to provide diapers for low-income families who cannot afford one of life’s most basic needs.  More than two million diapers were distributed in 2021.

Wasson Way, $25,000.  Small-scale nature-based ecosystems will to provide opportunities for outdoor STEM education.  Tiny forests in 30 foot circles will to advance the educational experience of nearby schools and colleges, provide an intervention for climate change, and improve Wasson Way, a recreational walking, hiking and biking path that is being extended both east and west from its current terminus at Montgomery Road.

In addition, a $25,000 grant made in October to the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra for youth education programs was adjusted to $50,000.

The Dater Foundation makes grants to non-profit organizations in the Greater Cincinnati area to carry out programs that benefit young people and focus in the areas of arts/culture, education, healthcare, social services and other community needs.  Information about the grantmaking process and guidelines and links to an online grant application website are available at www.DaterFoundation.org.

The private foundation was established by fourth-generation Cincinnatian, businessman and philanthropist Charles Dater (1912-1993) to ensure that his resources would continue to fund worthwhile community programs after his death.  The foundation has made more than 3,400 grants totaling over $68 million since its inception in 1985.
