Dater Foundation Awards 12 Grants in October

Cincinnati, Ohio, November 22, 2021 – The Charles H. Dater Foundation awarded 12 grants totaling $305,000 in October, including $25,000 to the Urban League of Greater Southwestern Ohio for its Youth Council Urban Champions program which prepares Cincinnati youth for college, careers, and life as adults.

The program will reach approximately 165 youth ages 11-18 in local communities considered most at-risk due to high levels of poverty and crime.  It includes workshops, field trips, civic engagement opportunities, and trainings.  As a result, youth participants will establish a clear path and goals for completing high school; pursuing college and/or training; entering careers; and becoming active citizens.

Grants awarded in October:

Baker Hunt Art and Cultural Center, $30,000.   Community outreach programs provide art making opportunities and positive outlets to youth after school and at summer art camp.

Bloc Ministries, $50,000.  General operating support for underserved and at-risk families, students, and individuals in need in the Price Hill area.

Cancer Support Community, $20,000.  The Children’s Cancer Support Program helps young people and their families confront the impact of cancer by encouraging them to share their feelings and experiences with others as they deal with the change that a cancer diagnosis brings in their lives.

Cincinnati Art Museum, $35,000. Family Learning at the Museum includes, REC Reads, CAM Kids Day, Summer Camp, the 10x10 Teen Art Expo as well as Artist Workshops, Studio Classes, Creative Reuse, and Family First Saturday. 

Cincinnati Youth Collaborative, $25,000.  Jobs for Cincinnati Graduates provides local youth with the educational support and job readiness training to successfully stay in school until graduation and go on to achieve sustainable employment.

Circle Tail, $20,000.  A therapy dog program raises and trains dogs for two years and then places them in schools to assist with therapeutic interventions and provide overall to students as well as staff.

Dragonfly Foundation, $25,000.  Support for pediatric cancer patients and their families visiting Cincinnati Children’s includes gifting and activity programs and networking opportunities, with respite at the Landing available as Covid protocols permit.

Inner City Youth Opportunities, $20,000.  A free, intensive after-school academic intervention and youth development program helps about 60 inner-city children in kindergarten through Grade 6 develop life and social skills and improve their academic abilities.

Keep Cincinnati Beautiful, $30,000.  The Environmental Education Program delivers an impactful message about litter prevention and environmental stewardship to elementary school children in the region.  There is no cost to schools.  High quality virtual programming is now a part of KCB’s menu of offerings.

Magnified Giving, $25,000.  High school and middle school students at about 100 area schools learn the importance, benefits and process of philanthropy by evaluating and making grants to non-profit organizations.

University of Cincinnati Foundation - Greater Cincinnati Stem Collaborative, $20,000.  Two after-school programs – 3d Printers Club and STEM Bicycle Clubs – meet weekly throughout the school year with the goal of developing and expanding students’ interest in STEM fields. 

Urban League of Greater Southwestern Ohio, $25,000.  Youth Council Urban Champions utilizes an asset-based approach to help youth achieve academic, career, and life goals by developing resiliency, leadership, determination, cultural competency, and community connections.

The Dater Foundation makes grants to non-profit organizations in the Greater Cincinnati area to carry out programs that benefit young people and focus in the areas of arts/culture, education, healthcare, social services and other community needs.  Information about the grantmaking process and guidelines and links to an online grant application website are available at www.DaterFoundation.org.

The private foundation was established by fourth-generation Cincinnatian, businessman and philanthropist Charles Dater (1912-1993) to ensure that his resources would continue to fund worthwhile community programs after his death.  The foundation has made more than 3,400 grants totaling over $60 million since its inception in 1985.
