Cincinnati, Ohio, June 14, 2021 – The Charles H. Dater Foundation awarded seven grants totaling $150,000 in May, including a $25,000 grant to Girls Scouts to benefit about 2,500 girls in Greater Cincinnati through school-based outreach programs and the Camp for Every Girl initiative.

Girl Scouts of Western Ohio (GSWO), which includes Greater Cincinnati, is one of the ten largest Girl Scout Councils in the nation, serving more than 40,000 girls in Western Ohio and Southeastern Indiana.  The Dater Foundation grant will enable GSWO to engage economically disadvantaged girls in the Girl Scout Leadership Experience.  Girls who participate develop a stronger sense of self, gain problem-solving and challenge-seeking behaviors, and, ultimately, grow as leaders.

Grants awarded in May:

Cincinnati Union Bethel, $25,000.  Scholar House is a new transitional housing program for low income, single parent families.  While seeking a post-secondary degree or certification, parents know their children receive quality childcare and early childhood education.

Clovernook Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired, $25,000.  The Center provides comprehensive low-vision rehabilitation services for youth ages 3-21 who are living with irreversible vision loss that interferes with school performance or daily living activities.

Girl Scouts of Western Ohio, $25,000.  Educational outreach features the development of additional pathways to participation and engages about 2,500 Greater Cincinnati girls in lower socioeconomic neighborhoods in non-traditional ways.

Hearing Speech & Deaf Center of Greater Cincinnati, $25,000.  Programming for youth with communication disorders and deafness will served 430 youth with professional treatment by speech and occupational therapists.

Northern Kentucky Community Action Commission, 25,000.  The Lincoln Grant Scholar House program provides affordable housing and educational support counsel and services to single student parents while also addressing the childcare and early education needs their children.

President Drive Church of Christ (Faith Alliance Coalition), $10,000.  After successfully pivoting to a drive-thru event to accommodate Covid-19 restrictions, the Coalition anticipates once again conducting its  Day of Hope in 2021 in a safe manner.  Backpacks as well school and hygiene supplies and information about community resources will be distributed.

YMCA – Great Miami Valley, $15,000.  Support to reduce the participation cost for children with special needs in a seven-week baseball program at the Joe Nuxhall Miracle League Field in Fairfield.

The Dater Foundation makes grants to non-profit organizations in the Greater Cincinnati area to carry out programs that benefit young people and focus in the areas of arts/culture, education, healthcare, social services and other community needs.  Information about the grantmaking process and guidelines and links to an online grant application website are available at www.DaterFoundation.org.

The private foundation was established by fourth-generation Cincinnatian, businessman and philanthropist Charles Dater (1912-1993) to ensure that his resources would continue to fund worthwhile community programs after his death.  The foundation has made more than 3,300 grants totaling over $58 million since its inception in 1985.
