Cincinnati, Ohio, September 4, 2020 – The Charles H. Dater Foundation awarded four grants totaling $65,000 in August, concluding its 2019-20 fiscal year having made 166 grants totaling $4.9 million. Annual support included more than $750,000 in special grants for Covid-19 relief efforts. Over $55 million in grants have been made to more than 450 non-profit organizations in the Foundation’s 35 years of existence.
August grants:
Community Meal Center, $15,000. Hot, homemade evening meals are served on Fridays and the last Monday of each month at two Hamilton churches to homeless and low-income individuals and families. Food is served to guests at their table and seconds are encouraged.
Council on Child Abuse, 10,000. Free classroom presentations educate children about abuse prevention and personal safety strategies. The program typically benefits more than 15,000 young people, but about one third of the scheduled classroom presentations were canceled due to the Covid-19 restrictions. For 2020-21, videos and teacher support materials are being created to provide alternate programming when necessary.
Economics Center, $25,000. The Student Enterprise Program (StEP) provides nearly 7,000 students age 8-11 with real-world applications of economics principles as they set up their own mini-economy in their classroom, save and invest their “school cash,” and create and sell goods and services at Market Madness. The Center is part of the University of Cincinnati and focuses on education and research.
Family Nurturing Center, $15,000. Kids on the Block features both in-school and, when necessary, virtual versions of its Bullies and School Safety Program. Children are educated about what constitutes bullying, promotes sensitivity toward peers, provides specific strategies to make schools a safer place, and helps children avoid or cope with bad situations.
Grant recipients were given permission to implement alternate programming as necessary to accommodate social distancing and other requirements dictated by Covid-19.
The Dater Foundation makes grants to non-profit organizations in the Greater Cincinnati area to carry out programs that benefit young people and focus in the areas of arts/culture, education, healthcare, social services and other community needs. The private foundation was established by fourth-generation Cincinnatian, businessman and philanthropist Charles Dater (1912-1993) to ensure that his resources would continue to fund worthwhile community programs after his death.
