Cincinnati, Ohio, June 7, 2020 – The Charles H. Dater Foundation awarded 12 grants totaling $160,000 in May, including $35,000 to Valley Interfaith Community Resource Center for its Back 2 School program.
Back to School will serve about 1,200 school-aged youth throughout Hamilton County, providing a new backpack filled with essential school supplies, a gift card for new shoes, and a new school uniform. The program lessens the burden on families and ensures that all youth can start the school year ready for success.
Grants made in May:
Cincinnati Association for the Blind, $25,000. Early Childhood and Youth Services Music Program, including the Annual Music Recital and partial support of two music specialists.
Gilbert Dater High School, $25,000. The Summer Bridge and Momentum programs for seventh graders provide summer enrichment and transition support to youngsters moving to the seventh grade.
Envision Children, $25,000. Five core programs are part of a creative initiative that aims to dramatically improve the academic performance of specific elementary school students in the Winton Woods School District.
LAM Foundation, $10,000. LAMposium in Your Living Room is Covid-19 alternate programming for patients diagnosed with the rare lung disease Lymphangioleiomyotisis. The program will include webinars and recordings that can be shared online.
Urban Health Project, $20,000. About 20 University of Cincinnati medical students spend their only open summer working full-time in internships at non-profit organizations, where they gain an increased understanding of the social factors that impact healthcare.
Valley Interfaith Community Resource Center, $35,000. The Back 2 School program provides clothing, personal care items, back packs and school supplies to about 1,200 children in low-income families.
Grant recipients were given permission to implement alternate programming to accommodate social distancing and other requirements dictated by Covid-19. The Dater Foundation participated in the community Covid-19 response fund activated by the Greater Cincinnati Foundation and United Way as well as by making special grants to current grantees. Covid-19 support to date totals over $750,000.
The Dater Foundation makes grants to non-profit organizations in the Greater Cincinnati area to carry out programs that benefit young people and focus in the areas of arts/culture, education, healthcare, social services and other community needs. The private foundation was established by fourth-generation Cincinnatian, businessman and philanthropist Charles Dater (1912-1993) to ensure that his resources would continue to fund worthwhile community programs after his death. The foundation has made more than 3,200 grants totaling over $54 million since its inception in 1985.
