Cincinnati, Ohio, June 11, 2019 – The Charles H. Dater Foundation awarded nine grants totaling $240,000 in May, including a $25,000 award to the Economics Center at the University of Cincinnati for its Student Enterprise Program.

StEP is a nationally recognized elementary school program that has produced a marked increase in student engagement, attendance, self-esteem, academic achievement, and educator effectiveness.  The program addresses two key educational needs at an early age: the need for classroom engagement as well as the need for 21st century skills related to entrepreneurship, critical-thinking, and financial responsibility.

StEP provides a safe learning environment where all students have the opportunity to succeed.  Students are rewarded for positive choices related to academics, school attendance, and respect for fellow classmates and educators.  Empowered by their ability to make choices, students become knowledgeable consumers, smart savers, and responsible citizens.

Grants made in May:

Chatfield College, $25,000.  The Learning to Live program is designed to recruit and educate low-income adult students by helping them with additional support in the areas of tutoring, child care, transportation and financial aid, all impediments to finishing their education.

Cincinnati Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired, $25,000.  Early Childhood and Youth Services Music Program, including the Annual Music Recital and partial support of two music specialists.

Cincinnati Scholarship Foundation, $50,000.  The New Horizons Scholarship Fund will provide renewable $2,500 annual scholarships to five 2019 graduates of Gilbert A. Dater High School, which is named for Charles Dater’s grandfather.

Gilbert A. Dater High School (Cincinnati Public Schools), $25,000.  Momentum Summer Bridge Program to provide summer enrichment and transition support to youngsters moving to the seventh grade, and an AP Boot Camp program to prepare students for Advanced Placement courses.

Economics Center, $25,000.  The Student Enterprise Program (StEP) provides students with real-world applications of economics principles as they set up their own mini-economy in their classroom, save and invest their “school cash,” and create and sell goods and services at Market Madness.  The Center is part of the University of Cincinnati and focuses on education and research

Envision Children, $25,000.  Five core programs are part of a creative initiative that aims to dramatically improve the academic performance of specific elementary school students in the Winton Woods School District.

Music Resource Center, $25,000.  Music education, studio recording, live performance, radio broadcasting, leadership training and mentorship are components of an after-school music education program that creates a sense of empowerment and accomplishment for teenagers.

Urban Health Project, $20,000.  Medical students spend their only open summer working full-time in internships at non-profit organizations, where they gain an increased understanding of the social factors that impact healthcare.

WAVE Foundation, $20,000.  The Finstitute After-School Aquatic Adventures program is designed to engage under-resourced students in discovering the importance of local waterways.

The Dater Foundation makes grants to non-profit organizations in the Greater Cincinnati area to carry out programs that benefit young people and focus in the areas of arts/culture, education, healthcare, social services and other community needs.  Information about the grantmaking process and guidelines and links to an online grant application website are available at www.DaterFoundation.org.

The private foundation was established by fourth-generation Cincinnatian, businessman and philanthropist Charles Dater (1912-1993) to ensure that his resources would continue to fund worthwhile community programs after his death.  The foundation has made more than 3,000 grants totaling over $49 million since its inception in 1985.
