Dater Foundation Awards Seven Grants in January

Cincinnati, Ohio, February 18, 2019 – The Charles H. Dater Foundation awarded seven grants totaling $160,000 in December, including a $20,000 award to the Cincinnati Boychoir to increase financial aid to boys from underserved neighborhoods.

The Boychoir provides exceptional concert opportunities and music education in a safe, diverse, and respectful environment.  Since 1965, the Cincinnati Boychoir has been dedicated to the musical, intellectual, and emotional development of young men and has served as one of the foremost music education and performance organizations in the region.  

Boys attend weekly rehearsals, retreats, music theory classes, and a Summer Music Camp for Boys.  Each year, the Cincinnati Boychoir presents approximately thirty annual performances in the Greater Cincinnati region, and has performed concerts and completed residencies both at home and abroad.  About 200 young men participate annually, and full or partial scholarships are provided to about 40 percent of them.

Grants made in January:

Cincinnati Arts Association, $25,000.  Artists on Tour brings talented artists-educators directly into schools and youth organizations, enhancing learning with unique programs that vary in culture and art form.  A ticket transportation subsidy fund supports SchoolTime performances for students at the Aronoff Center.

Cincinnati Boychoir, $20,000.  Located in the urban arts core of Cincinnati at the Aronoff Center for the Arts, the Boychoir reaches approximately 200 young men each year from more than 90 tri-state schools.  Financial aid expands musical opportunities for boys in underserved neighborhoods.

East End Adult Education Center, $25,000.  Free GED education and job readiness skills instruction is available to young people and adults who have dropped out of school and need credentials to improve their opportunity for success in life. 

Historic Southwest Ohio, $20,000.  Education programs and outreach focus on history and life in the 19th century for 5,000-plus young people in kindergarten through high school.

Milestones, $25,000.  The Therapeutic Horseback Riding Program teaches basic horsemanship skills and grooming to nurture emotional health and improve cognitive, physical and psychological function for young people with Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Down syndrome and other similar diagnoses. 

Parachute Special Advocates for Children of Butler County, $20,000.  Community volunteers go through rigorous training to become Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASAs), and then advocate for foster children, ages birth to 18, who are often abused, neglected, abandoned, or lost in the child protective system.

Roundabout Opera for Kids Cincinnati, $20,000.  ROK Cincy connects eager grade school audiences to opera through high quality outreach programs presented by volunteer students and other performers.  Programs are provided at for over 8,000 youngsters at 40 schools and community centers at no charge. 


The Dater Foundation makes grants to non-profit organizations in the Greater Cincinnati area to carry out programs that benefit young people and focus in the areas of arts/culture, education, healthcare, social services and other community needs.  Information about the grantmaking process and guidelines and links to an online grant application website are available at www.DaterFoundation.org.

The private foundation was established by fourth-generation Cincinnatian, businessman and philanthropist Charles Dater (1912-1993) to ensure that his resources would continue to fund worthwhile community programs after his death.  The foundation has made more than 3,000 grants totaling over $48 million since its inception in 1985.
