Dater Foundation Awards Nine Grants in July

Cincinnati, Ohio, July 28, 2017 – The Charles H. Dater Foundation awarded nine grants totaling $160,000 in July, including a $20,000 grant to the Civic Garden Center for its Youth Education Program.

The Center’s outreach includes a robust school garden program that connects and supports botanical education at 96 school and youth organizations, professional development workshops for teachers, and a garden-to-table family summer camp experience conducted in several local community gardens.  Participation opportunities are available for children of every age to enjoy the outdoors, make healthy choices and learn to become good environmental stewards.  Education programs reached 7,245 children and adults in 2016, a 13% increase over the prior year.

Grants made in July:

Cincinnati Art Museum, $20,000.  Family Learning at the Museum includes Art in the Making, Baby Tours, Family First Saturday, Summer Camp, Family ARTventures Young Artist Open Studio, and Wee Wednesday outreach to young people throughout the community.  

Cincinnati Public Radio:
• WGUC/Classics for Kids, $20,000. Classics for Kids, a program designed to introduce elementary schoolchildren to classical music in a fun way and featuring weekly radio programming and a comprehensive, interactive web site. 
• WVXU/Democracy and Me, $20,000. A program to give young people a clear sense of their civic responsibility by providing teachers with tools and curriculum and students with concrete learning experiences. 
• Additional children’s programming support on both WGUC and WVXU and announcements that promote the good work being done by other Dater grantees, $20,000.

Civic Garden Center, $20,000.  The Youth Education Program enables young people to foster an appreciation and respect for nature and the environment, understand where food comes from, and engage in healthy, outside activity.  Offsite programs at schools and during the summer at community gardens has increased participation. 

Community Meal Center, $10,000.  Hot, homemade meals are served every Wednesday and Friday evening at two Hamilton churches to homeless and low-income individuals and families.  Food is served (no standing in line) to guests and seconds are encouraged.  

DePaul Cristo Rey High School, $15,000   The Graduate Success Program follows DPCR graduates, most of whom are the first college students in their families, throughout their college careers and continues to provide support.

Literacy Network of Greater Cincinnati, $15,000.  Children’s Basic Reading Program uses the Orton-Gillingham multi-sensory structured language technique to provide assistance to children in grades one to five who have severe reading difficulties or symptoms of dyslexia.

School House Symphony, $20,000.  Teaching Tomorrow’s Audience Today brings over 250 live musical performances by members of a six-person ensemble to schools throughout Greater Cincinnati. Fees are kept low through contributions and grants, and part of the Dater grant will fund programs at underserved inner-city schools. 

The Dater Foundation makes grants to non-profit organizations in the Greater Cincinnati area to carry out programs that benefit young people and focus in the areas of arts/culture, education, healthcare, social services and other community needs.  Information about the grantmaking process and guidelines and links to an online grant application website are available at www.DaterFoundation.org.

The private foundation was established by fourth-generation Cincinnatian, businessman and philanthropist Charles Dater (1912-1993) to ensure that his resources would continue to fund worthwhile community programs after his death. The foundation has made more than 2,800 grants totaling over $43 million since its inception in 1985.
