Dater Foundation Awards 14 Grants in August; $1.9 Million for 2015-16 Grant Year

Cincinnati, Ohio, September 5, 2016 – The Charles H. Dater Foundation awarded 14 grants totaling $157,250 in August, concluding its 2015-16 fiscal year having made 126 grants totaling $1,953,746. Over $41 million in grants have been made to more than 400 non-profit organizations in the Foundation’s 31 years of existence.
Grants made in August:
Adopt A Class Foundation, $15,000. Employee groups at companies and other organizations adopt a class/classroom and provide students with mentoring support and field trips.
Alliance for Catholic Urban Education, $10,000. ST-Math, a technology-based math enrichment program for Grades K-8, will be introduced at five schools where academic performance is below standard.
Bi-Okoto Cultural Institute, $10,000. Support for a cultural and educational arts residency that uses multi-sensory and multi-disciplinary learning experiences that are integrated into students’ daly academic curriculum.
Cancer Family Care, $10,000. Treehouse Children's Services, a core program for youth ages four through 18 who are coping with their own diagnosis, a loved one’s cancer diagnosis or the death of a loved one from cancer.
Children Inc., $15,000. Region-wide Service Learning Initiative, a free teaching and learning program that enables teachers to impact their students through participation in high quality learning experiences that benefit others in the community. Students experience the joy and satisfaction that comes from giving of their time and effort.
Cincinnati Observatory Center, $10,000. Support for education department staffing to allow the Center to continue its recently expanded youth outreach program.
Cincinnati Therapeutic Riding and Horsemanship, $10,000. Riderships (scholarships for those unable to afford the program) that allow young persons with a wide variety of disabilities to enjoy the benefit of an accredited therapeutic riding experience.
Friends of Sunrock Farm, $10,000. A scholarship fund allows children from low-income families to experience the joys of nature through field trips and day camps at an educational farm in Wilder, Ky.
Hearing Speech and Deaf Center, $15,000. Katie’s House, a therapeutic office designed to resemble a home-like environment in order to relieve anxiety on the part of young patients.
Kennedy Heights Arts Center, $10,000. Building Arts Engagement for Teens capitalizes on the Center’s successful programming with younger children and expands opportunities for a diverse mix of young people ages 12-17.
Leadership Scholars, $10,000. The Parent Academy is an intense seven-week program for groups of 20 parents who learn how to become more involved in their children’s education and help them succeed in school, in college and in life.
Music Resource Center-Cincinnati, $10,000. Operating support to provide a facility for after-school music education and recording resources to teenagers, thereby creating a sense of empowerment and accomplishment.
WAVE Foundation, $15,000. The Community Outreach Scholarship Fund funds science education featuring live animals from the Newport Aquarium at schools for under-privileged students.
YMCA Great Miami Valley YMCA, $2,500. Support to reduce the participation cost for children with special needs in an eight-week baseball program at the Joe Nuxhall Miracle League Field in Fairfield.

The Dater Foundation makes grants to non-profit organizations in the Greater Cincinnati area to carry out programs that benefit children and focus in the areas of arts/culture, education, healthcare, social services and other community needs. The private foundation was established by fourth-generation Cincinnatian, businessman and philanthropist Charles Dater (1912-1993) to ensure that his resources would continue to fund worthwhile community programs after his death.
