Dater Foundation Awards 11 Grants in June

Cincinnati, Ohio, July 21, 2016 – The Charles H. Dater Foundation awarded 11 grants totaling $157,000 in June, including a $15,000 grant to the Contemporary Arts Center for youth education programming.

CAC Education Programming creates experiences that enable young visitors and their parents, caregivers, or teachers to engage with, think about, and enjoy/appreciate contemporary art.  Programs are designed to inspire the next generation of artists through hands-on activities, exploration of art mediums and techniques, and an introduction to the best contemporary art.

Grants made in June:

Chatfield College, $10,000.  Chatfield College, $10,000.  Learning to Live, a program designed to recruit and educate low-income adult students by helping them with additional support in the areas of tutoring, child care, transportation and financial aid, all impediments to finishing their education.

Cincinnati Public Radio:
• WGUC/Classics for Kids, $20,000. Classics for Kids, a program designed to introduce elementary schoolchildren to classical music in a fun way and featuring weekly radio programming and a comprehensive, interactive web site. 
• WVXU/Democracy and Me, $20,000. A program for teachers and their students about the importance of voting and pursuing accurate knowledge about candidates and issues. 
• Additional children’s programming support on both WGUC and WVXU, $20,000.

Civic Garden Center, $15,000.  Youth Education Program enables young people to foster and appreciation and respect for nature and the environment, understand where food comes from, and engage in healthy, outside activity. School Gardens and Compost Kids and Green Learning Station field trips are cornerstones of the program.

Contemporary Arts Center, $15,000.  Youth Education programming includes the UnMuseum, a part of the Center that encourages students, teachers and families to enjoy an interactive and hands-on art experience.

Exponent Philanthropy (formerly Association for Small Foundations), $2,000.  Support of programs and resources to promote public understanding of philanthropy and assistance to small-to-mid-size foundations.

Inter Parish Ministry, $20,000.  Choice Food Pantries in Newtown and Batavia as well as a Mobile Food Pantry provide food support that helps very low income parents provide food for their families. The program includes nutrition education in cooperation with Ohio State Cooperative Extension Service.

People Working Cooperatively, $10,000. The Summer Student Service Group Project provides supervision and resources in leveraging the one-week time contribution of young philanthropist volunteers as they work on projects that further PWC’s goal of helping keep elderly people in their homes. 

Stepping Stones Center, $15,000.  Saturday Kids Club provides extracurricular activities for children ages five to 16 whose disabilities prevent them from participating fully in typical after-school activities, and Saturday Young Adults offers late-afternoon and early evening social opportunities for similarly disabled young people.

Wordplay, $10,000.  WordPlay Scholars meet with their trained volunteer learning coaches after school and on Saturday afternoon and to build a deeper foundation of both educational and life skills, incorporating creative literacy strategies into daily reading and discussion time. 


The Dater Foundation makes grants to non-profit organizations in the Greater Cincinnati area to carry out programs that benefit children and focus in the areas of arts/culture, education, healthcare, social services and other community needs. The private foundation was established by fourth-generation Cincinnatian, businessman and philanthropist Charles Dater (1912-1993) to ensure that his resources would continue to fund worthwhile community programs after his death. The foundation has made more than 2,600 grants totaling over $41 million since its inception in 1985.
