Dater Foundation Awards Six Grants in February

Cincinnati, Ohio, March 7, 2016 – The Charles H. Dater Foundation awarded 12 grants totaling $185,000 in February, including a $20,000 grant to the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra to support free or low-cost outreach programs for young people both at Music Hall and in schools and community centers.

Grants made in February:

Camp Joy Foundation, 10,000.  Program for underserved youth that enables economically-disadvantaged children to participate in fun, safe outdoor activities that promote development of self-esteem, social skills and decision making through a resident camp, an overnight weekend retreat, a leadership program or a school visit.

Cincinnati Arts Association, $10,000.  Artists on Tour brings talented artists-educators directly into schools and youth organizations, enhancing learning with unique programs that vary in culture and art form.  A ticket transportation subsidy fund supports SchoolTime performances for students at the Aronoff Center.

Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, $20,000.  CSO’s core educational and community engagement programs program, provide low-cost or free comprehensive, standards-based learning to over 18,000 students at Young People’s Concerts at Music Hall, through visits by musicians to classrooms and community centers, and at educator and career workshops.

City Cure (City Gospel Mission), $10,000.  Whiz Kids is a one-on-one, volunteer-based tutoring and mentoring after-school program at 67 locations that impacts 1,400 children who are academically at-risk due to disabilities, poverty, homelessness and other barriers to success.

East End Adult Education Center, $10,000.   Free GED education and job skills instruction that targets young people and adults who have dropped out of school and need credentials to improve their opportunity for success in life.

First Baptist Church of Cumminsville, $5,000.  The Faith Alliance Coalition’s Day of Hope 2016 will distribute back-to-school backpacks and supplies to 500 children at a community celebration focused on building relationships with Cincinnati Police and social service groups.

The Greater Cincinnati Foundation: Learning Links, $40,000. A program that funds small grants to teachers and other educators allowing them to provide creative programs or special events for more than 30,000 area students.

The Greater Cincinnati Foundation: Summertime Kids, $30,000. A program administered through a volunteer committee enabling local nonprofit organizations to provide summer activities such as field trips, day camps, gardening, arts and crafts for deserving young people.

Junior Achievement of OKI Partners, $10,000.  Extending the Momentum expands upon the use of  JA’s time-tested programs by providing soft skills training to more than 600 at-risk youth.

Loveland Initiative, $10,000.  Expansion of the annual back-to-school backpack program that provides backpacks and school supplies to children in low-income families.

Notre Dame Urban Education Center, $10,000.  After-school and summer academic enrichment program in which students in high poverty areas and low performing schools in Covington and Newport get one hour of one-on-one tutoring from volunteers.

Xavier University, $20,000.  Summer service internship program that fosters young people’s commitment to community service by placing college students in full-time internships at non-profit organizations.

The Dater Foundation makes grants to non-profit organizations in the Greater Cincinnati area to carry out programs that benefit children and focus in the areas of arts/culture, education, healthcare, social services and other community needs. The private foundation was established by fourth-generation Cincinnatian, businessman and philanthropist Charles Dater (1912-1993) to ensure that his resources would continue to fund worthwhile community programs after his death. The foundation has made more than 2,500 grants totaling over $40 million since its inception in 1985.
