Dater Foundation Awards 10 Grants in December

Cincinnati, Ohio, January 25, 2016 – The Charles H. Dater Foundation awarded 10 grants totaling $137,000 in December, including a $15,000 grant to Cincinnati Ballet for its CincyDance! program that introduces ballet to youngsters at their school and offers opportunities to progress to a higher level. At risk students in underserved schools learn life skills.

Grants made in December:

Cincinnati Ballet, $15,000.  Cincy Dance!, a collaborative effort between the Ballet and local schools that provides free, long-term dance instruction to students in the community. The three-phase program starts with in-school dance instruction to third graders and includes scholarships to a more intensive training program for those who excel.

Cincinnati Museum Center, $20,000.  Children’s Museum, which serves young people and families with exciting, educational and age-appropriate programming throughout the year. Support also includes the Learning Through Play conference and registration vouchers for underserved participants.

Cincinnati Opera Association, $20,000.  OperaCadabra! is a magical music program is for young children and features professional artists performing opera classics in the Jarson-Kaplan Theatre at the Aronoff Center for the Arts.

Cincinnati Works, $10,000.  The Job Readiness program assists at risk young adults in identifying their strengths and skills, and then moving forward with specific goals and strategies toward employment and economic self-sufficiency.

Freestore Foodbank, $15,000.  Power Pack Expansion, providing enhanced carry-home meals for children in low-income families to ensure they will have food over weekends and during holidays when school meals are not available.

Special Olympics Hamilton County, $10,000.  The Summer Games at Ohio State University is a culmination of local training and local competitions in track and field events for 125 young people with significant cognitive disabilities.

Madcap Productions, $15,000.  Performances by Madcap’s highly acclaimed puppeteers at its Hats Off series and at area elementary schools that would not otherwise have the resources to provide this kind of programming.

Muscular Dystrophy Association, $10,000.  MDA Summer Camp, where children ages 6 to 17 with various neurological diseases are able enjoy typical childhood activities as accommodations are made for their illnesses and counselors provide assistance.

Ohio River Foundation, $10,000.  River Explorer and the School Outdoor Habitats are hands-on programs that introduce more than 4,000 schoolchildren to the benefits of environmental stewardship.

Ronald McDonald House Charities, $12,000.  The Family Performance and Activities Program provides games, arts and crafts, shows and entertainment – many of them held in the Charles H. Dater Performance Theatre -- for guests at Ronald McDonald House.

The Dater Foundation makes grants to non-profit organizations in the Greater Cincinnati area to carry out programs that benefit children and focus in the areas of arts/culture, education, healthcare, social services and other community needs. The private foundation was established by fourth-generation Cincinnatian, businessman and philanthropist Charles Dater (1912-1993) to ensure that his resources would continue to fund worthwhile community programs after his death. The foundation has made more than 2,500 grants totaling over $40 million since its inception in 1985.
