Taft Museum of Art and Artists Reaching Classrooms Program

Artists Reaching Classrooms, a youth education program of the Taft Museum of Art, takes art instruction into Greater Cincinnati high schools and encourages students to cultivate their artistic talents. For many, the experience leads to studying art in college or art schools and often to a career. Local artists participate in the program and earn stipends. Students benefit from working with and learning from accomplished instructors.
Some 266 students at 12 area high schools participated this year, the 20th year of the program. Works by 81 students were selected for exhibit at the downtown branch of the Cincinnati and Hamilton County Library.
Top scholarship awards winners and their works:
-- Annie Peters, Subway Shepherd. Annie is a student at Summit Country Day and plans to attend Pratt Institute.
-- Erin Kaising, Bustin’ Out. Erin is a student at Archbishop McNicholas and plans to attend UC/DAAP.
-- Olivia Dean, Pitch Pulling. Olivia is a student at Holy Cross and plans to attend Mt. St. Joseph.
Other scholarship winners: Kevin Butler (Kings), Antonio Losekamp (Archbishop McNicholas), Hunter Miller, (Lakota East), Alexis Wheeler (Lakota East).
Others receiving Honorable Mention recognition: Katie Harrison (Summit Country Day), Will Huber (Covington Catholic), Conner Nielander (Holy Cross), Clint Noble (Covington Catholic), Jalen Walker (Winton Woods).
Participating schools were: Archbishop McNicholas, Butler Tech’s School for the Arts, Covington Catholic, Holy Cross, Kings, Lakota East, Milford, Princeton, Riverview East, Summit Country Day, Taylor and Winton Woods.
The Taft's docents play a major and active role in the Artists Reaching Classrooms program. Two ore three docents are assigned to each school. They introduce the program to the students, lead the tours of the Taft when the students visit the museum, and generally facilitate “their” school’s participation. A jury composed of a small group of docents also chooses the scholarship winners. Docents also raise funds for the program.
The Dater Foundation,a longtime supporter of the Taft Museum of Art and its youth education programs and outreach, has made 24 grants totaling over $1 million to the Taft, including $500,000 during the museum's recent major renovation for the Dater education room.
