CSC Education & Outreach Program
Whether in person or online, the CSC Education Program has been serving students for more than 25 years. Dedicated to improving perception, appreciation, and overall comprehension of Shakespeare, the Education Program is constantly evolving to the needs of teachers and students, equipping the next generation of Cincinnati’s leaders with essential 21st Century skills and a personal confidence in their own ability to learn. Through the CSC Education Program, students and teachers learn the necessary skills to understand Shakespeare’s plays and apply dynamic learning concepts to their daily lives. Beyond English and Language Arts classes, the CSC Education Program can be adapted across many different subjects. From history to the humanities to STEM, the process of grasping Shakespeare and the Classics often benefits other key curriculum expectations. Learning this way has dramatic implications for students – in ways far more important than simply Shakespeare comprehension.
During the 2022-2023 school year, CSC will build back to its pre-pandemic levels of engagement through new and historic partnerships, will continue to find ways to serve the Cincinnati regions students and teachers through educational matinees, workshops, classes, camps, residencies, and PROJECT38.
Program Goals:
The CSC Education Program operates on the principle of "WITH not FOR," fostering a collaborative environment where students, teachers, and teaching artists work together as a unified team. The curriculum incorporates relevant and engaging source material, ensuring students have a sense of ownership by actively participating in the creation of their own work. This approach has a profound impact on students, empowering them with vital 21st-century skills such as collaborative thinking, analytical abilities, and personal confidence in their capacity to learn. Moreover, students demonstrate increased levels of tolerance, creativity, and empathy beyond the classroom setting.
Thus, GOALS AND OUTCOMES throughout the 2022-2023 school year included:
To cultivate students’ appreciation for classic literature and live theatre
To improve students’ overall engagement with classroom curriculum
To improve students’ 21st century skills (creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, grit)
To increase students’ social skills (self-confidence and ability to make friends)
To develop students' empathy and understanding for others
Program Results:
During the 2022-2023 season, the CSC Education Program served 40,378 students through in-classroom residencies, seven weeks of Summer Camp, 27 PROJECT38 Workshops, 52 in-school performances, 19 educational matinees and an eight-day PROJECT38 Festival and the Otto M. Budig Theater.
At the theater, 3,054 Cincinnati-area students attended morning performances of King Lear, The Living Dead, Little Women, The Rewards of Being Frank, The Taming of the Shrew, and As You Like It. Beyond the walls of the theater, CSC’s Touring Company travelled to 30 schools this school year, presenting adaptations of Romeo and Juliet and Macbeth. Then in the Spring, CSC partnered with Muse Machine, an arts education association based in Dayton, Ohio, to present Much Ado About Nothing. Through this collaboration with Muse Machine, CSC visited 22 new schools in Montgomery, Greene, and Shelbey, and Champaign counties. CSC closed out the school year with an eight day PROJECT38 Festival showcasing projects from 390 students. 27 schools participated in PROJECT38 with the help of 8 CSC teaching artists who facilitated free workshops at schools across the Greater Cincinnati Region.
The results from PROJECT38 most clearly demonstrate the overall success of the CSC Education Program.
• Almost 80% felt an increase in the CONFIDENCE
• Over 90% reported feeling more CREATIVE
• 91% believed PROJECT38 helped with their COLLABORATION skills
• 69% saw an increase in SELF-DISCIPLINE
