Programming for Youth with Communications Disorders and Deafness Grant Application:

Our planned youth activities in 2021 anticipate delivering 63 hours of programming to 430 youth, with the reach expanded beyond our target audience of earlier years. Our 2021 youth programs will include youth being treated by our speech and occupational therapists for communication disorders in addition to hard of hearing and deaf children. Our 2021 programming will help more children with communication disorders using the concepts that have made our youth programming successful for so many years.

Unsurprisingly, youth with speech-language disorders feel more social stress than their peers with typical language abilities (Wadman, 2010). Children who attend our 2021 youth programming will see they are not alone, and others share their communication challenges. Some of those challenges may mirror their own, others will be very different.

We know that about 90% of children with hearing loss are born to hearing families, and hard of hearing youth attending our 2021 youth programming have very different experiences from their hearing friends. Some may seldom meet anyone else with hearing loss.

Grant Evaluation Report:

We are extremely pleased with every element of our Programming for Youth with Communications Disorders and Deafness.

Staffing changes in early 2022 are important in the successes we enjoy with this program and have extended to other areas across our organization.

Our staff in our Community Services for the Deaf division is increasingly recognized as subject matter experts in the (communication) disability community and in Greater Cincinnati, generally.

We expect to continue enhancing this program with activities asked for by clients and patients. For instance, next month, we are involved with HSDC Day at the Renaissance Festival (Waynesville, OH). This effort replaces the longstanding HSDC Zoo Day, which attracted as many as 400-600 neighbors at times. Our community advisors urged a new and fresh activity. Our long-held Zoo outing had become tiresome, according to our community council.

Results:

This report covers your investment of $25K (June 2022). With your investment, we supported 32 events in the grant period (Jul 22-Jun 23) and reached 1,320 youths and their families.  The previous grant funding ($25K in June 2021) supported 12 events and 81 hours of programming and reached 835 youths and their families.
