WAVE Foundation continues to provide outreach education at schools, day cares, libraries, community events, summer camps, senior centers, and anywhere we can share the amazing aquatic world and the importance of conservation. Current education programs include WAVE on Wheels (many programs funded through the Community Outreach Scholarship Fund), Learning Curriculum Initiative, Virtual Learning Adventure, Camp WAVE, and Gills Club. WAVE's education programs are unique and predicated on a simple logic model of WONDER, KNOWLEDGE & ACTION. WAVE extends the footprint of and access to Newport Aquarium by taking aquatic animals and engaging lesson plans into the community and to those who may not be able to afford a visit to the Aquarium. In 2022, WAVW will serve more than 21,000 people, primarily K-6 graders!
The global pandemic and its negative effect on academic achievement make WAVE's program's more important than ever. With continued pressure to meet requirements for national and state standardized tests, and a lack of resources, most schools have little to no opportunity to supplement and energize learning through field trips. WAVE on Wheels to the rescue! WAVE works closely with teachers to be sure the programming is specific and supportive to current classroom learning. Programs are cross curricular, engaging, and help students grasp difficult concepts through hands on activities.
