Community Building Programs for children and young adults with developmental disabilities

Grant Application:

Starfire's Community Building programs enrich the lives of children and young adults with developmental disabilities, like Down syndrome, autism, and cerebral palsy, in several ways: we work with approximately 600 people: one-on-one with 50 people (and growing!) comprised today of 16 kids ages 0-12, 15 youth ages 13-18 and 19 young adults ages 19-30, along with 320 family members and 300 caregivers and ordinary citizens to build a more inclusive, fuller life for people who have been marginalized and isolated because of their disability.

Our staff works to identify interests, passions and goals for children and young adults in an effort to remove barriers, create opportunities to meet and interact and spark relationships with ordinary citizens with whom similar interests are shared.

We mentor the families of children and young adults to develop these interests and relationships by helping them create Valued Social Roles (VSRs) where they can be known for something other than their disability. And as those VSRs are established via volunteering, civic engagement, clubs and sports, our staff works with families and young adults to create and launch Community Projects: events or gatherings within their neighborhood or community that offer the opportunity for greater connectivity, awareness and the chance to be known for something other than their disability. We provide micro-grants to help offset the costs (refreshments, flyers, etc.) of each Community Project. And as a result, families, children, and young adults with developmental disabilities realize greater well-being, health and happiness.

Grant Evaluation Report:

Community-building efforts alongside families of loved ones with developmental disabilities is one of the most important ways to intervene and stop the cycle of social isolation and segregation. Education, outreach, 1:1 support, kindness, funding for projects and the opportunity to explore what someone with a disability is interested in - and what they're not interested in - are just a few of the ways that we can work together to heal our culture that marginalizes people with disabilities. Starfire is committed to this work, and our evolution from "day programming" to community-building is helping us migrate from light/broad touch to more focused, deliberate conversations and the development of stronger ties within our community. We're seeing great results, but there's much more work to be done, namely more targeted outreach to the 1,500 people who've we reached this year through our education sessions.

Results:

Starfire was able to continue its community building work in 2022 alongside Down syndrome, autism, and cerebral palsy, and their family members, caregivers, and community advocates, to help all live fuller lives.
The goal of our community building work is to work 1:1 with people to identify interests, passions, and goals for those impacted by developmental disabilities, with the goals of building valued social roles, sparking sustainable connections based on common interests (versus pity), and delivering a deeper touch in the form of outreach and education on how to build community to heal our culture, a culture that, sadly, marginalizes people with disabilities.
