PWC VIP Student Service Program

Grant Application:

The goal of PWC’s Student Service Program, a component of the PWC Volunteer Involvement Program (VIP), is to engage youth in important and meaningful volunteer experiences that benefit both the students and low-income residents of Greater Cincinnati. During the 2022 program, we anticipate that approximately 225 youth volunteers will provide 3500+ hours of service providing important home repair and yard maintenance services for 25 or more low-income households across Greater Cincinnati. This program helps low-income homeowners stay safe, independent, and healthy in their own homes, and it helps students build technical and interpersonal skills, form significant relationships, gain exposure to realities of urban and rural poverty, and most importantly, develop a commitment to service that will shape their lives for years to come.

Grant Evaluation Report:

More than 800 student volunteers donated over 4000 hours of service to PWC, lending a helping hand to low-income neighbors and contributing a wide array of services. 299 of them participated in our summer student services programs, far exceeding our goal. The extraordinary civic engagement of our youth this past year is particularly inspiring and humbling as it comes at a time when volunteerism across the region and the nation still struggles to rebound to pre-pandemic levels.

PWC continues to be humbled by the outpouring of good will and hard work from our student volunteers. This year we had over 800 young volunteers - including 299 who devoted an entire week to volunteerism during our student summer program. All told, young people donated some 4000 hours of services, participating in a variety of PWC volunteer events including our Summer Student Volunteer Program, Colerain Give-Back Day, Prepare Affair, and special group projects. This count does not include children who participated in Prepare Affair and Colerain Give-Back Day with their parents, so the total count and hours donated significantly exceed this number. Partner organizations for this program are both local and national, and in 2022 included:
o Connor Middle School
o Moeller HS
o St. Xavier HS
o St. Ursula HS
o Cincinnati PD Young Cadets
o Mission Serve (National Group)
o Catholic Heart Workcamp (National Group)
o New City Presbyterian
o BLOC Ministries – Side by Side
o Easterseals Serving Greater Cincinnati
o Boy Scout Troop 974
o Lasalle High School
o Lakota West High School
o Colerain High School

These groups provided important and impactful services for low-income homeowners ranging from raking leaves to prevent slips and falls that could cause a serious injury, to rebuilding a deteriorated back porch, to installing a ramp to increase a home’s accessibility, to clearing overgrown yards, and more.
