Kids on the Block
Family Nurturing Center works to end the cycle of child abuse by promoting individual well-being and healthy family relationships by providing a comprehensive array of programs and services designed to help children and families in Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky.
The Dater Foundation provided funding for the Kids on the Block Program. Kids on the Block offers a comprehensive approach to educate children and adults on issues of child abuse. This school-based prevention service is designed to increase public awareness about the problem of child abuse and equip children with the skills to recognize and report child abuse. Kids on the Block is seen by more than 25,000 children, parents and educators annually.
The School Age Program includes skits using life-size Kids on the Block puppets. The puppets discuss general abuse information by telling what happened to them and what followed the disclosure. Puppeteers address disclosures of child abuse.
Program Results (Fiscal 2018):
- 22,676 children and 2,243 adults in Kids on the Block performances
- 292 Kids on the Block Performances (112 Bullies and School Safety, 180 Child Abuse)
- 54 Sessions of the Story-Telling for Day Care
- 4 Community Events
- 17,911.5 hours of service (does not include community events)
- 78% (895 out of 1,154) of children completing pre and posttests increased knowledge and awareness of child abuse as demonstrated by improved scores from pre-test to post-test.
65% (727 out of 1,130) of children completing pre- and post-tests increased knowledge and awareness of bullying as demonstrated by improved scores from pre-test to post-test.
Bullies and School Safety: 99% (112 of 113) of teachers and counselors viewing the performance reported that the program was helpful to children.
Child Abuse: 99% (159 of 160) of teachers and counselors viewing the performance reported that the program was helpful to children.
