Education Program Enhancements
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, nearly 45% of children in the City of Cincinnati and nearly 20% across the tri-state region live below the federal poverty level. When families struggle to pay rent and buy groceries, school supplies are low on the priority list. At Crayons, the belief is that education is key to breaking the cycle of poverty. Through its ability to purchase core school supplies and provide them and donated items to Greater Cincinnati teachers and students through its Teacher Free Store, Crayons is affecting the quality of life in the community. Teachers report that students who have the supplies they need feel more engaged in school and are more focused on their work. They are no longer embarrassed because their families cannot afford even the basics.
A Dater Foundation grant touched three key areas within Crayons:
1) The teacher experience while shopping at the Teacher Free Store.
2) The products produced through the Crafts with Conviction program, which affects both the inmates at the correctional facilities and how teachers are able to use the finished product in the classroom.
3) The annual Back to School initiatives that produce much needed product and financial support to benefit teachers and students in the region.
