WordPlay's Virtual Arts Programs
WordPlay Cincy's mission is to create spaces for young people to fulfill their potential by discovering, honoring and sharing their voices. At Wordplay, stories write the future. A grant from the Dater Foundation supported diverse virtual activities during the past program year. WordPlay’s virtual programs consisted of a blend of written instruction, pre-recorded video lessons, live workshops via Google Hangouts, and a variety of platforms for participants to share their work. WordPlay partnered with Cincinnati Public Schools, local non-profits, and arts institutions to offer virtual programs, led by WordPlay’s trained teaching artists and staff, integrating art with reading and writing to create an experience that’s engaging for young people. Workshop themes included comics and illustration; personal narrative writing; storytelling and civic engagement; and exploring poetry through hip-hop. Over 75 virtual engagements were offered with schools and partner organizations, engaging 1,500-plus young people across all virtual programming. Students were also able to address social emotional learning and pandemic related challenges in the programming, providing support, growth, and healing during a difficult time.
A WordPlay Success Story ...
Below is a photo of one of WordPlay's Teaching Artists, Brandon Isaac, and his student, Keyatti (who graduated from South Avondale Elementary in June 2021 and will be attending Hughes High School in the fall). Keyatti did an amazing job writing a song and making a music video with Brandon, WordPlay awarded him a new iPad for all his hard work.
