Democracy and Me
WVXU’s outreach program, Democracy & Me, helps students understand the role journalism plays in our democracy. The program includes curriculum for teachers at www.democracyandme.org as well as personal mentoring at local high schools. Thanks to support from the Dater Foundation, the program was expanded by hiring a Democracy & Me Coordinator, Dr. David Childs, Ph.D. Northern Kentucky University, to champion the project. Since Dr. Childs added curriculum content in a blog, ongoing engagement from local teachers has increased. Dr. Childs and Cincinnati Public Radio invited 12 local teachers, educational consultants and grad students to join the Democracy & Me Advisory Committee and with their help a Student Section has been added to the website. Student Spotlights and links to seven local high school newspapers so young journalists can sample the work of their peers. Democracy & Me plans to offer its first student scholarship competition and teacher awards, a second teacher workshop to focus on creating podcasts, and a social media and postcard campaign to more than 800 teachers. Participation is expected to double during the 2018-19 program year.
