Notre Dame AmeriCorps Mission Volunteers
The Ohio Province of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur is part of an international congregation founded by St. Julie Billiart in Amiens, France in 1804. The mission remains unchanged since its founding: a commitment to education and to take a stand with people who are poor, especially women and children in the most abandoned places. As part of that effort, a Dater Foundation grant has helped leverage federal dollars through the AmeriCorps Program and to underwrite mission volunteers assisting with the education of the approximately 200 students at Corryville Catholic Elementary School. Almost all of these students are from low-income families, with most qualifying for government-subsidized school lunches. The volunteers impact the lives of these children by improving their educational performance, by providing successful role models, and by teaching important life skills. One hundred percent of Corryville students graduate, most secure scholarships to college-preparatory schools, and most go on to college.
