River Explorer and Mussels in the Classroom
Ohio River Foundation is a regional conservation organization dedicated to protecting and improving the water quality and ecology of the Ohio River watershed. Its program activities are restoring habitat and educating and training the next generation of environmental stewards. A Dater grant supports participation of thousands of students each year, grades 4-12, in the River Explorer and Mussels in the Classroom (MIC) programs. For River Explorer, they catch fish with seine nets, perform water quality sampling, and examine macroinvertebrates in area rivers, creeks, and streams. For MIC, students observe, monitor, and care for live mussels in classroom aquarium for two weeks. More than 50,000 students have participated in these programs since 2005. Despite a moratorium on field trips during the 2020 COVID-19 impacted year, more than 1,000 students in Greater Cincinnati still received STEM enrichment by having week-long MIC experiences. More than 50,000 students have participated in these programs since 2005.
