Art Programs for Inner-city Youth
n the 2019-2020 year, Elementz served over 200 inner-city teens in its music and dance center in the Findlay Market district of Over-the-Rhine. In our second year of working out of our new center, Elementz established new relationships with neighborhood children and teens, and initiated art and music classes for children ages 6-12 for the first time. Further expansion of our work included collaboration with Findlay Market for Poetry and Music, with the Cincinnati Recreation Commission for visual arts, and the local community to energize Findlay Park as a place for children and families. As COVID affected our community, we moved several of our programs out to the sidewalk and to other outdoor spaces so children and teens could continue to learn in a safe environment. All of Elementz programs for children and teens focus on development of both artistic skills using art from hip hop culture, and also the development of key social-emotional skills that can help youth achieve success in the education environment and in future careers.
