Whiz Kids Tutoring and Mentoring
City Gospel Mission empowers men, women and youth to break the cycle of poverty. The Mission’s programs are centered on caring, personal relationships focused in four key areas: food and shelter, addiction recovery, job readiness and placement, and programs for youth. With support from the Dater Foundation, City Gospel Mission's Whiz Kids program tutors and mentors 800 youth who are academically at-risk because of disabilities, poverty, and/or homelessness. Volunteers provide one-to-one tutoring and mentoring to the same child year-round. The program helps youth overcome difficult life circumstances and learning challenges to excel in reading and math.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Whiz Kids paused most in-person tutoring in March 2020. Some tutoring sites were able to tutor safely in person or switch to virtual tutoring. Other sites quickly adapted to support the children in new ways during such a difficult time. For example: supervised porch visits for tutors and their youth, virtual book clubs, pen pal kits, delivering healthy food baskets, backpacks, school supplies, and grocery gift cards. Over the holidays, hundreds of books, family games, food, gloves, socks and hats were also delivered to WhizKids children and their families.
