Playhouse School Outreach Tour

In addition to producing world-class, professional theatre for over 130,000 Greater Cincinnati residents annually, the Playhouse offers an extensive range of educational programs. In its 2019-20 season, the Playhouse brought the magic of live theatre to schools in the region through its School Outreach Tour, consisting of two adaptations of children’s books: The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by Kate DiCamillo and Stuart Little by E.B. White. Dragons Love Tacos by Adam Rubin, which was slated to run in the spring of 2020, was postponed to the 2020-21 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Plays were performed by members of the Acting Internship Program, giving young actors real-world experience, and featured professionally-designed costumes, sound effects, and sets. The Playhouse produced study guides and held actor-led discussions after performances to strengthen learning and engagement. Before the pandemic closed area schools, the tour reached 44 schools with 53 performances and served 10,147 children. Support from the Dater Foundation allowed for fully or partially covering the costs for 33 Title I schools that have minimal access to arts education.
