MainStage Season 2019-2020 – School Underwriting Program
The mission of The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati (TCT) is to educate, entertain, and engage audiences of all ages through professional theatrical productions and arts education programming. Its vision: to awaken a lifelong love of theatre in children and the young at heart. TCT celebrated its 100th season in 2019-20, making it the oldest professional theatre for young audiences in the country, and the only professional theater in the region that devotes its entire MainStage season to an audience of children. A grant from the Dater Foundation for the School Underwriting Program provided ticket subsidies to schools so that no school paid more than $8 a student, even though the cost to TCT is $25 to put a child in a seat. As a result, 33,833 children from 660 schools were able to attend one of our productions. Funds from the Dater Foundation allowed us to offer schools with 50% or more of their students eligible for free or reduced lunch programs even deeper discounts, directly impacting 6,212 students who were therefore able to attend who would not have had this opportunity otherwise. In addition, 318 individuals benefitted from the two sensory-friendly performances we offered for those with autism sensory disorder.
Due to COVID-19, the final production of the season was canceled, as well as remaining TCT on Tour productions and TCT Academy Classes. TCT's revenue loss was approximately $450,000, however, due to increased generosity from a few major donors, subscribers who converted $72,000 in ticket refunds into donations, a Paycheck Protection Program loan, an Emergency Relief Grant from ArtsWave, and extreme attention to expense reduction, TCT was able to mitigate this loss maintaining a positive cash position and slight budget surplus at the end of its fiscal year.
