Respite Care for Families Experiencing Homelessness
Bethany House provides comprehensive services for at-risk and homeless families, from prevention of homelessness through post-shelter stabilization support. Our mission is to empower homeless and at-risk families with the solutions to achieve housing stability and long-term self-sufficiency. During the COVID-19 epidemic, all congregate shelters closed and families moved to extended stay hotels to maintain safe social distancing. All 470 school-aged children received the equipment required for virtual learning, but it soon became apparent that parents needed assistance to help their children with schoolwork. Parental responsibilities kept parents from completing the work they needed to accomplish – finding employment and identifying housing for their families. A grant from the Dater Foundation provided an educational specialist to work with the struggling students while simultaneously providing parents with the freedom to pursue their goals for long-term stabilization of the family. Perhaps the best assessment of the program came from a student participant: “I cannot wait to get back to school!”
