Outdoors for All: Treating the Mental and Emotional Effects of COVID-19 with Outdoor Adventure and Adventure Therapy
Adventure Crew’s mission is to open the doors of nature for city teens to strengthen their connection with self and others and create the next generation of healthy outdoor enthusiasts and environmental stewards. A grant from the Dater Foundation helped to introduce 68 new Crew teens to nature and connect over 700 teens to kayaking, biking, hiking, fishing, swimming and more. This grant also supported the Crew Cares pilot, a social emotional learning program that weaves lessons in self-concept, self-management, and relationship building into outdoor adventures. Teens who participated in the Crew Cares pilot reported gaining skills to manage their emotions, improved grades and better relationships with authority figures in their lives. Spending time in nature is organically therapeutic and stress-relieving; after a year of disconnect, the teens are overwhelmingly grateful for the opportunity to get outdoors.
