Winter Break Food Sack Program
Childhood Food Solutions (CFS) provides food to Cincinnati elementary and preschool students to carry them over school breaks when they are not receiving free meals at school. A Dater Foundation grant funded sacks of winter-break food for over 2,000 students who live in low-income communities in Millvale, Price Hill and Roll Hill (formerly known as the Fay Apartments). This Dater support was especially important because most of winter break occurs in late December when early-month government benefits are running out. CFS sacks are filled with shelf-stable “filling” groceries so students can share them with their siblings and their parents or guardians. CFS distributes the sacks through schools and has received no feedback that families experience stigma or shame when children bring sacks home. The food is especially valuable for families that cannot get to a food pantry or when rich “holiday” food is running out.
