Education, Arts & Creative Programs for Children & Youth

Peaslee Neighborhood Center is a community hub in Over-the-Rhine, Cincinnati. In 1984 after the closing of their neighborhood school, low-income mothers envisioned a community center where people of all ages come to learn. Using the gifts of voice, organization, collaboration, and perseverance, they raised over $209,000 to buy Peaslee outright from the Board of Education and made their vision a reality. Woven tightly into the fabric of Peaslee Neighborhood Center is a deep value of education. Though no longer a traditional school, Peaslee is grounded in the practice of participatory education—a process by which we are all active learners and teachers. This model of education invests in the whole person, building on personal strengths and valuing unique perspectives as expertise that others can learn from. For over 34 years, our community education center has served as a hub for education, enrichment, community building and social change work for residents of Over-the-Rhine and other communities across our city and region.

Peaslee Neighborhood Center provides consistent access to arts, music and civic education for low-income families through a number of programs: Peaslee Kids Summer Camp (ages 6 - 10), Piano Program (ages 6 - 18), Girls’ Writing Circles program (ages 9-13), Agents of Change youth program (ages 11 - 15), Community Education Service Learning (ages 13 - 18) & Family Engagement Events (all ages). The programs serve approximately 300 children and their families across the year, deepening access to high quality, education, enrichment and childcare opportunities.

Peaslee programs apply a holistic approach centered on participatory education and led by trained, committed educators who engage with families, the community and the kids they teach and learn with each day. Additionally, arts, recreation and civic engagement experiences are tied to curriculum focuses, including extended learning into our city’s arts and community institutions through field trips.
