Speech-Language Services for Children
The Hearing Speech & Deaf Center of Greater Cincinnati (HSDC) strengthens our community though advocacy and by supporting individuals and families to overcome obstacles to communication. Children’s programming for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing is designed to help children form friendships, to increase awareness of opportunities available to them as Deaf adults, and to alleviate the loneliness and isolation that some children feel due to differences in modes of communication. A grant from the Dater Foundation enabled HSDC to provide screenings, therapy, and financial support to children throughout the Greater Cincinnati area. The following results were achieved through the program-
177 children throughout the Greater Cincinnati community received a speech-language screening at no cost in daycare programs and in Cincinnati Early Learning Centers located in Price Hill, Downtown Cincinnati, East Walnut Hills, and the East End.
The average age of the children screened was 3.6 years old. Of the children screened, 98 were male and 77 were female. Children receiving screenings identified as 56% white, 33% African American, 6% multiracial, and 4% other.
44% of children screened for potential speech-language delays were identified for further evaluation and treatment of a delay and/or disorder.
75% or 12 out of 16 of children receiving speech-language services demonstrated progress towards age-appropriate speech-language skills on quarterly progress reports.
75% or 12 out of 16 of parents/caregivers of children receiving speech-language services reported quarterly improvement of spontaneous use of targeted speech-language skills outside of therapy.
