Tutoring and Academic Coaching

University of Cincinnati’s Gen-1 Program was created in 2008 to provide first-generation, low-income college students with the necessary support to successfully negotiate their freshman year and earn a bachelor’s degree within six years. Research shows that successful completion of the freshman and sophomore years is critical to improving retention rates and six-year graduation rates, especially for students from underrepresented and underserved populations.

Funding from the Dater Foundation was focused on tutoring for Gen-1 students. UC students who have done well in a particular discipline were hired as tutors and given rigorous training. Tutoring was offered March 2019, Fall 2019 and Spring 2020 for a variety of courses, including Applied Calculus, College Algebra, Anatomy and Physiology, Biology, Statistics, and General Chemistry. Funding will also support Fall 2020 tutoring.

Eighty-six students availed themselves of at least three sessions of tutoring in the House, which is 55% of the House population. Forty participants reported that it was less likely they would have sought tutoring had it not been offered on-site.
