Butler Philharmonic Youth Orchestra
ABOUT THE BUTLER PHILHARMONIC
The orchestra is celebrating its 68th anniversary in 2019 and is one of the oldest, on-going arts organizations in Ohio. Begun in 1951 as the Hamilton Symphony Orchestra (HSO), it later became the Hamilton Fairfield Symphony (HFSO). In 2017 the HFSO expanded to become the Butler Philharmonic (BP) to better signify its performance area as the Butler County region. The mission of the BP is to bring live, high quality symphonic music to an underserved population, and to act as a facilitator of educational engagement in the region. In the facilitator role, the BP encourages youth participation in music and the arts through scholarships, the BP Youth Orchestra and other youth activities and programming.
The Butler Philharmonic Youth Orchestra provides a full orchestra experience to young west-central Ohio musicians, inspiring them to high artistic standards through challenging repertoire from the world of symphonic and popular classics within a supportive environment. The BPYO is the official youth orchestra of the Butler Philharmonic Orchestra. The youth orchestra is led and coached by professional musicians who share their knowledge of orchestral technique and performance practice in an atmosphere of team building and enthusiasm, preparing students with the skills needed to enjoy and pursue music now and for the rest of their lives. The Dater Foundation grant provided work scholarships to three young persons from underserved communities, visible leaders in the youth orchestra who would not have otherwise had an opportunity for this experience. One of these young people is also being helped to afford higher level private instruction to prepare for university and conservatory auditions, in pursuit of a degree in music education. The Dater Foundation underwrote a season of rehearsals and concerts, providing a practical and inspiring educational experience to forty-five young students and an enjoyable and uplifting musical experience to one hundred seventy-five audience members.
