CISE/Friars Club After School Study & Sports Program

CISE provides funding for nine Catholic elementary schools in Cincinnati’s inner-city.  Students are taught Gospel-based values in an environment of respect, safety and discipline.  Children of any faith are welcome to attend.  The Friars Club/CISE After-school Sports Program, administered by the Friars Club with the support of a Dater Foundation grant, works with six of the CISE schools: Corryville Catholic, St. Boniface, St. Francis de Sales, St. Francis Seraph, St. Joseph, and Resurrection.  Friars Club staff members arrive at the conclusion of the school day with healthy snacks for the students.  The students have homework and study time before participating in various sports programs.  The sports programs include basketball, volleyball, and soccer clinics with FCCincinnati.  Fifteen volunteers, who have all been trained in VIRTUS and completed a background check, coach the children in sports as well as providing mentoring and modeling leadership.  This after-school program serves 355 scholars from kindergarten through 8th grade and keeps its focus on skill development with emphasis on respect, responsibility, good sportsmanship, and leadership.

Three "success stories" …

Alexis Jones attended a CISE school, St. Boniface, and participated as a CISE Friars Club athlete.  Alexis is currently a junior at Mercy McAuley High School and volunteers as a coach for the past two years in both basketball and volleyball.  She has become a great role model.

Nia Buchannon also attended St. Boniface school and was a volleyball player in the CISE Friars Club program.  Nia is a freshman at Roger Bacon High School and volunteers to coach the CISE Friars Club girls’ volleyball team.

James Johnson attended another CISE school, St. Francis Seraph, and was a CISE Friars Club basketball player.  He went on to attend Roger Bacon High School and played basketball there for four years.  James is now a senior at Wittenberg University and is the leading scorer on their basketball team.
