UpSpring Summer 360°
UpSpring empowers children experiencing homelessness by providing opportunities for education and enrichment. As the region’s only non-profit exclusively serving the educational needs of homeless children and youth, UpSpring provides these students with the consistency needed to achieve academic success. A Dater grant supported UpSpring Summer 360°, a seven-week academic and enrichment program that allows UpSpring to meet the immediate and direct educational, social, and emotional needs of approximately 100 students in Cincinnati. UpSpring Summer 360° provides students an exceptional experience that focuses on literacy and math skills, exploratory field trips, fitness and nutrition lessons, and opportunities for creativity, discovery, and leadership. Children experiencing homelessness are typically two to three years behind in their education, and the summer curriculum works toward bridging the educational gaps they face. Approximately 81% of students who attended Summer 360° increased or retained their math skills over the seven-week program, and 75% of students increased or maintained their literacy scores. Students also had significant improvements in their sense of hope, self-esteem, and stability.
